Electron transfer via an Outersphere Mechanism

Metal complexes can transfer electrons from one metal ion to the other, via an outer sphere mechanism. In order for the electron to be transferred to the other complex, the two complexes must distort until both have the same bond lengths (as shown in b.) Only then can an electron be transferred.
