The orientation of lone pairs as indicated by VSEPR theory, compared with the orientation of HF in the gas-phase hydrogen-bonded complex. The HF molecule is oriented along the three-fold axis of NH3, out of the H2O plane in its complex with H2O, and off the HF axis in the HF dimer.
